Next-gen Deus Ex in the works

David Anfossi, studio head for Eidos Montreal, has revealed in a blog post that the development team is working on a new Deus Ex games for PC and next-gen consoles.

That’s not really surprising considering the critical success of previous entry Deus Ex: Human Revolution. What is, however, is that they’re working towards something they’re dubbing the Deus Ex Universe: “an ongoing, expanding and connected game world built across a generation of core games.”

While that seems to insinuate a Deus Ex MMO or something, that’s not exactly what Edios Montreal has in mind. It’s probably better to think of it along the lines of the Mass Effect experience, where you had multiple games spanning one overarching plotline. Whether or not this means we’ll keep a character from game to game is unclear at this point, but the RPG nature of Deus Ex certainly makes that a possibility.

Kicking off this Deus Ex Universe will be a new game for PC and next-gen consoles. It’ll be the first entry in a “deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games”. In addition to a series of new titles, we can expect tablet and smartphone spin-offs as well as novels and comics adding to this Deus Ex Universe.

Very little is known about the new Deus Ex and Anfossi warns that they’re still very early on in development and that we shouldn’t expect much more for now. All we have so far is that piece of concept art you see above (full image below); it depicts a “ghetto-city” for trans-human segregation based on class.

According to Anfossi: “The people in this segregated class have reshaped their environment, nostalgic for their ideal of Cyber Renaissance. This dark and dystopian vision sets the tone for things to come in Deus Ex.”
