Can a price be set on innovative technology? South Africans are always looking for the latest gadgets and gizmos, and one such device from Huawei has just landed on our shores, with many already interested in getting the new gadget.
South Africans will have to dig very deep into their pockets if they want to own the new Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design tri-fold smartphone.
Huawei officially announced the launch of the Mate XT Ultimate Design in South Africa on Friday.
This piece of innovative technology does not come cheap and will set you back R70 000 or between R2 999 and R3 099 a month over 36 months on contract.
That works out to a whopping R111 500 for a phone, which is the price of a small or used car. The Citizen spoke to some mobile phone dealers and apparently, many customers have already pre-ordered the device.

The Huawei Mate XT, which finally debuted worldwide in Kuala Lumpur, Indonesia, in February, will likely excite tech enthusiasts.
While the price is a shocker, foldable smartphones are all the rage with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series, Oppo with its Find N2 Flip, and Honor with its Magic V2, among others, while Apple is noticeably absent from the list.
These brands are likely to face tough competition from Huawei and it will be exciting to see what they have up their sleeves.
With the Mate XT’s massive 10.2 inch tablet-sized display that folds into a pocket-friendly smartphone, the device is set to redefine the way South Africans work, play and stay connected.
The first-ever trifold display in the industry has smashed ceilings while setting many new records in smartphone innovation.
The device remains only slightly thicker than a regular phone, even with all three folds stacked together.
When fully unfolded, it becomes the thinnest foldable in the world, measuring just 3.6mm.
Cameras are where many foldables make compromises. But the Mate XT pioneers a 10-step adjustable physical aperture in its extremely thin and light body.
The new phone boasts an AI assistant with text summary, translation and editing functions, as well as AI-boosted image editing functions such as trimming unwanted parts of photos.
Huawei officially introduced the Mate XT in a keynote presentation by Huawei executive Richard Yu at the firm’s headquarters in the southern city of Shenzhen.
“This is the world’s first triple-folding phone. We have put in a huge amount of effort into solving the problems regarding mass production and product reliability,” Yu said.
Huawei also announced the availability of the Mate X6.
It is incredibly thin at just 9.85mm when folded and 4.6mm when unfolded. The Mate X6 features dual OLED displays, aerospace-grade aluminium framing and reinforced Kunlun glass.
The Mate X6 retails for R44 999 or between R1 599.00 and R1 799.00 a month over 36 months on contract.
The new devices were unveiled on the same day Huawei announced its new partnership with Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club.
