The latest instalment in the long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise has been well-received by most critics, but it’s unlikely to win over new players.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows also features in the Autumn issue of NAG magazine, which was launched in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening.
The action-adventure game set in feudal Japan gave younger audiences a taste of stealthy violence and the desire to achieve the rank of Grand Master.
Feudal Japan
The franchise has been around for almost two decades, with the first game released in 2007. With scenes set from ancient Egypt to the American Revolution, fans were begging for the game to be set in feudal Japan. They are the closest thing to time travel.
NAG publisher Len Nery commented on their autumn cover featuring Assassin’s Creed.
“We wanted you to see the NAG office and to be a part of the launch of this very controversial game that’s on our front cover that’s getting a lot of good and bad.
“But, the thing about NAG is we are unbiased, so we felt that this game deserved to be on the cover,” Nery said.

Protagonists
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows transports users to 16th-century Japan, the era of warlord Oda Nobunaga during the chaotic Sengoku period.
This world of warlords, political intrigue and betrayal offers a thrilling new setting and introduces two new protagonists, Yasuke, a powerhouse Samurai and Naoe, a nimble shinobi.
Yasuke is strong and skilled and can cut through enemies when a situation suddenly explodes into conflict, while Naoe is fast and quiet, making playing stealthily a viable and enjoyable way to experience the game for the first time in ages.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, Ubisoft+, Amazon Luna, and Macs with Apple silicon via the Mac App Store as well as Windows PC through the Ubisoft Store, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
