The 3 best streaming music sites in SA
No one buys music any more thanks to music streaming services. Here is our pick of the best 3 sites available.
People no longer buy music. With a selection of music streaming services available in South Africa, why should they?
Many of these services are available at competitive prices – or, if you don’t mind ads, you can get a few of them for free.
Here is the breakdown…
1. Simfy
In 2012, before the streaming wave truly hit South Africa, Simfy Africa was the first music service to officially launch in the country.
It has over 32 million tracks, which you can listen to on the web, or use desktop and mobile apps (Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows phones are all supported).
Listening to Simfy on the web, PC, or Mac costs you R25 a month with “All Access” at R60 a month.
2. Apple Music
If you have an iPhone, then Apple Music is the option which makes the most sense because it integrates your existing music library to the Music app. It works on Mac, PC, 4th generation Apple TV, or any Apple product that runs on iOS.
It has a free global radio station, called Beats 1, available to anyone. And, if you want access to its full library of music, it will cost R59.99 a month. This gives you offline play, unlimited streaming, and you can add content to your library. An advantage is getting access to albums that launch exclusively on Apple Music (usually huge names like Beyonce).
Apple also offers a family membership of R89.99 a month, which gives unlimited access to six people without you having to share personal accounts.
3. Google Play Music
Having reached local shores in December 2015, Google’s Play Music service is one of the newest to reach the country.
Play Music comes with a free 3-month trial (or a 6-month trial if you’re a Samsung Galaxy S7 / S7 Edge user) and, thereafter, will cost you R59.99 a month.
The service gives you offline music playback, an MP3 store, and the ability to upload music that you already own.
You can listen to Play Music using the Chrome browser, via PC (or Mac via the Chrome browser), Android phone or tablet, Android TV, Android Auto, Android Wear, Chromecast, and Sonos.
