‘Taxpayers’ money used to fund Mandoza’s funeral’

Thousands of rands was spent by the provincial and national government towards the funeral costs of Mandoza while a large sum of money was deposited into his wife's account.

R185,000 is the total amount of taxpayer’s money that was channeled towards Mandoza’s funeral while his wife, Mpho Tshabalala was given cash.

Sunday World reports that the Gauteng department of arts and culture spent R90,000 with the national branch of the department forking out R95,000. The provincial funds were paid to Grace Bible Family church and this was confirmed by Bishop Mosa Sono, who said the amount was for the renting of the building and maintenance costs.

R95,000 was deposited in Mpho’s account and it is not clear if those funds were used towards funeral costs. The government also paid for an undertaker to bury Mandoza despite there being an offer from another undertaker to do that for free.

“The gesture to assist the Mandoza family is not unique only to the family and has been done before for many sport, arts and political icons,” a spokesperson from the Gauteng arts and culture department said.
