Steyn City gives back through art
“Madiba, who endorsed the concept of a new city in 2007 and planted trees at the time, is smiling down on us today” were the words of Graca Machel at the Steyn City opening on Tuesday.
Gauteng Premier David Makhura joins Caroline Steyn, Graca Machel and other attendees in a toast following the opening of Steyn City north of Johannesburg, 10 March 2015. Multi billion rand resort Steyn City is a massive masterpiece, boasting many “green” initiatives such as renewable energy and indigenous landscaping. Over the years the resort has also been contributing by employing workers from the surrounding communities.
Steyn City is at the epicentre of a burgeoning micro-economy north of Fourways and has already had direct positive socio-economic benefits for neighbouring, disadvantaged communities through the creation of more than 11 500 jobs.
Just to give you an idea of the sheer size of the place, Steyn City is six times the size of Sandton City, four times the size of Monaco and two and a half times the size of Central Park in New York.
“It is more than just an incredible resort, it is a lifestyle” one of the Steyn City architects told The Citizen. Steyn City also hosts an art project headed by artist Charles Gotthard, who gave us better introspection in the video below:
