Sorry, you’re not important enough to see Jennifer Lopez live

Superstar Jennifer Lopez will be in South Africa this November.

The queen of dance floor bangers was added to the list of performers at the 2016 South African of the year awards today. Lopez joins ‘Blurred Lines’ hit maker Robin Thicke as one of the headliners at the third instalment of the ANN7 awards show.

While it’s good news for South African JLo’s fans (and there are many), you, unfortunately, won’t be able to see JLo live. The event is closed off to the public, only open to the political and entertainment elite of South Africa.

Since inception, the ANN7 South African of the Year Awards have been the centre of a number of blunders. The Gupta-backed awards’ legitimacy have been called into question since 2014 for favouring Zuma allies – and on the entertainment front, the awards have been mediocre at best.

The awards opened in 2014 with a lacklustre performance from ex-Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger. Last year, American pop royalty Christina Aguilera was announced as the headlining performer at the show, which also moved the venue to the Ticketpro Dome. ANN7 allegedly spent millions on advertising, before Aguilera pulled out a few weeks before the show. After the announcement, ticket holders were refunded and the show’s format changed to an ‘invite only’ event, with a live broadcast of the show on ANN7. At last year’s awards Jason Derulo, the other headliner, caused a Twitter meltdown after he asked the South African audience “Y’all speak English right?” during his similarly disastrous set at the awards.

This year the awards will again be an invite only affair. If you want to see JLo perform in South Africa for the first time ever, you will have to tune in to DStv Channel 405 at 7am November 25.
