Samsung Z Flip 5: Flipping into the future where luxury meets performance

Samsung’s latest folding smartphone, the Z Flip 5, doesn’t just follow in the footsteps of its predecessors, it takes a quantum leap ahead.

This phone is a beauty – slightly thinner, slightly brighter, and substantially better than the previous Flip models.

Let’s take a closer look!

The Flex Window will revolutionise the way you use a smartphone, enabling you to complete tasks or read notifications without unfolding the device.

The hinge has also improved, and the Snapdragon 8 processor fuelling this phone means you’ve got the power of a PC right in your pocket.

Design and aesthetics

Its new hinge design ensures the phone folds seamlessly flat, removing that irksome gap which in the past acted as a magnet for dust and grime.

Sounds good?

This is the epitome of luxury and attention to detail that Samsung brings to the Z Flip 5.

It comes in four colours: Graphite, Cream, Lavender and Mint, and has a sleek fingerprint sensor on the side.
Folded, the phone measures 3.4” – it even fits into those rear Jeans pockets – and opens up to a beautiful 6.7” display.

The Flex Window

The focus of the phone is undoubtedly the Flex Window and you might have seen the “hands-free selfie” angle. But don’t be fooled, it has so much more to offer.

The enlarged 720 x 748 (60Hz) panel lets you do everything from replying to texts, toggling your flashlight and accepting calls to checking notifications; all without flipping open the phone.

FlexMode also makes it easy to access controls during video playback or music streaming, making navigation so much easier.

With a myriad of cover screen wallpapers and presets, the customisation options are endless.

It also supports various apps and widgets, from Google Maps and WhatsApp to step counters and finance widgets and the weather.

Battery juice goes the distance

Let’s be honest, in this load shedding era, we need a phone that will go the distance.

The 3 700 mAh battery doesn’t disappoint, and it supports Super Fast Charging too.

With the Z Flip 5’s battery lasting around 30 to 35 hours (depending on the screen usage), Samsung has your back even when the lights go out.

Furthermore, the Flip can also handle up to 20 hours of video playback, and music playback of over 50 hours. That is the equivalent of a road trip from Cape Town to Tanzania!

Need extra juice? Just enable the low-power mode to keep going.

All about that camera

You’ll find dual 12MP cameras on the front of the folded device, next to the cover screen (wide and ultra-wide lenses).

These lenses are capable of low-light performance shots with improved sharpness.

There is a 10MP inner camera, which is ideal for video calls. That said, you can use the main cameras for your selfies since the cover screen now doubles up as a viewfinder.

Hold the phone like a camcorder, or prop it unfolded on a flat surface to act as a tripod – it truly is a multi-flex device from any angle.

And let’s not forget the AI Nightography feature for crisp, clear videos and photos taken at night, because “losing sunlight shouldn’t mean losing out on quality”, Samsung says.

Power and performance

Under its glass and metal shell, the Samsung Z Flip 5 is armed with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

It’s the top-of-the-line Android processor designed for Galaxy – arguably the most powerful processor on the market for foldable phones.

This gives the Z Flip 5 unrivaled performance and seamless multitasking capabilities, coupled with smoother graphics and brighter visuals.

The Z Flip 5 (512 GB/8 GB) is available from R2 999 per month or R31 999 once-off, and benefits include Samsung Care+, Samsung Rewards, as well as the option of bundling up with other Galaxy devices.
