Now is the perfect time to rejuvenate your skin

Chemical peels are a popular way to shed the signs of December decadence and have become more affordable.

January is almost over, bringing with it the real beginning of 2019. This month your wallet may have been empty, but according to Dr Reza Mia, your skin is the real victim of the summer holidays.

Mia recommends a variety of peels and treatments to get the glow back and remove sun-damaged skin.

“You definitely see a difference when someone comes in during winter rather than after summer. When someone comes in after summer, there’s specific problems you pick up. More alcohol at parties, more time under ultra violet rays and even wearing more makeup when going out affects the skin, dries it out and leaves a mark.”

Post-holiday blotchy skin is commonplace and Mia says it’s beneficial to have treatment after the damage. Usually people would go on a skin-perfecting binge before summer, but you get more bang for your buck the other way round.

The famous Kim Kardashian, featured in the above photo, underwent PRP to rejuvenate her face using the Vampire Facelift Procedure. The "Vampire Facelift" is a procedure that involves withdrawing a patient's own blood, processing it to create "platelet-rich plasma (PRP)," then re-injecting it to erase wrinkles and create a more youthful look. Vampire facials are proving to be one of the more popular solutions at Mia’s practice and there’s sound reasons for that. “It doesn’t use weird chemicals, it’s a natural solution using your own platelets,” says the skin whiz.

The procedure starts with your blood being withdrawn to create platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This is injected into the face to treat wrinkles and ensure rejuvenation. The injected PRP has many of the same effects as dermal filler. One of the procedure’s biggest drawcards is that side-effects are minimal.

“It uses your own blood so there’s no synthetic components, which means no risk of allergic reaction, and so far there haven’t been reports of other side-effects. “There can, however, be reactions like irritation, bruising, swelling, but these typically clear soon after the procedure,” she says.

Chemical peels are also a popular way to shed the signs of December decadence and have become more affordable. Chemical peels can address a laundry list of problems like scars, fine wrinkles, acne and discolouration.

For those only concerned with smoothness, botox remains a popular option, although it is not as permanent as peels. “”Botox is only semi-permanent, but since the industry has grown so much it has become an option open to more people, not just an elite group.”

Mia says treatments like chemical peels and injections are safe, non-invasive and effective, with results evident immediately or after a few days. In fact, going under the knife has become a drastic option, considering the alternatives.

“It really is important for people to realise that you should look into skincare during summer as the damage can be lasting,” Mia reiterates.
