Tourists vanish into thin air on jet ski trip in Barbados

The two have not been seen at all since Monday.

Two American tourists are missing in Barbados after renting jet-skis and heading out to sea on a calm and sunny day. Oscar Suarez, 32, and Magdalena Devil, 25, both from New Jersey, disappeared after renting a jet ski at 2:34 p.m. at Holetown Beach on the island’s western coast. Both were wearing life jackets when they left the beach, but whether this would have made a difference is entirely unknown as the pair have vanished into thin air.

Roughly 30 minutes after their departure, the jet ski operator noticed he had not seen the couple for some time and began to ask other operators to look out for the pair. When they had still not returned an hour later the operator notified the Royal Barbados Police Force, telling the force that the couple seemed to be lost at sea.

“The operator became worried and contacted other operators in the area to carry out a search but they were not sighted,” the force said in a statement. “The Police Marine Unit and the Barbados Coast Guard conducted a search of the area extending as far as the Bridgetown Port but were unable to locate either the couple or the jet ski.”

The couple’s hotel has further confirmed that neither of them had returned to the hotel that afternoon. Missing since Monday, it was confirmed on late Tuesday that the couple still had not been found, and to date, there are no further sightings of the two.

According to ABC News, Suarez’s mother, Ninfa Urrutia, said the couple had been dating for about a year. Suarez has two children from a previous marriage: 10-year-old Elias and 5-year-old Tatiana.

“I’ve been calling; I call and call the police, the U.S. Embassy in Barbados, they can’t provide me with any answers,” Urrutia said, according to ABC News. “They haven’t called me back to let me know what I need to do or find out what’s going on with my son. They’re just not calling back.”
