Lady Du sips on a glass of Bulldog Gin, that’s how she unwinds
The Woza rainmaker has recently put a very busy year behind her and, if her growing success is anything to go by, 2023 may be equally, if not crazier and more beautiful.

2022 ended on a high, Lady Du toured the United Kingdom along with two prize winners, who had the opportunity to get a glimpse into her world, and experience performances to an entirely different audience than what the artist may have been used to at home.
The tour was another successful partnership with her longstanding sponsor Bulldog Gin.
When Lady Du packs for going on tour, whether at home, on the continent or across the ocean, she has a few essentials that she packs, including her treasured Bulldog Gin. She said: “My essentials are performance outfits, cellphone, makeup and my hair (wigs). These are all non-negotiable as it’s important that I look good.”
She always looks incredible and flawless. Lady Du is an accomplished performer and a musical ambassador and treasure for South Africa, Lady Du said that her travel companions were a highlight of the trip and added: “Being able to perform in a different environment where I have new found fans was incredible. It’s amazing to know your music is embraced in different places/countries.”
Educating foreign audiences about her music, about Amapiano, its roots and what the genre is all about is important to her. She said: “When performing in different geographical locations I try to focus on teaching my music and trying to ensure they (audiences) understand the message my music conveys.
Most of my music is a message to people, which enables me to adapt to different audiences as most of them can relate to the stories I tell.”
She was a bit nervous before taking to the stage in a foreign country, too. She said: “I only get nervous when I perform for a new crowd in a different country where they don’t necessarily understand my music. Other than that, I don’t get nervous. This is a craft I’m passionate about where I’m constantly bettering myself every day.”
And on reflection, her career and path to ascendancy spoke volumes. She first learnt how to deejay at around age ten and, later, when success slowly arrived, she worked in her dad’s automotive workshop to earn an income and to fund the development of her career.
She believes that an individual’s background doesn’t have to impede nor provide an advantage to an aspiring artist’s career, but rather that it is up to yourself, and what you do to realise your goals. She was quoted saying: “Find your light. It starts with you.”
While the music industry has changed significantly over the past two decades, leaving compact discs and other dinosaur technology behind on the one hand, and concomitant to that, changing the way in which music is marketed and consumed. The media, said Lady Du, has also played a positive and large role in the development of new artists.
She said: “I think we’re at a point where we have broken down quite a few barriers. Thanks to social media we are able to market our music without incurring extra costs for public relations.
We’re also able to have successful careers outside of the radio (airplay). I think for the future artists, we’ve paved a way that’s made it easier for them to come into the industry and have the opportunity to have successful careers without the many barriers we had.”
