Often the coats, jerseys, hats and scarves that were fashionable last year simply don’t work any more. But this doesn’t necessarily mean you need an entire new wardrobe, says fashion stylist Nokukhanya Ngoma.
“The cheapest way to get ‘new’ winter clothes is of course the second-hand shop, but buying all the season’s clothes from a second-hand shop could make you feel frumpy,” says Ngoma.
“Use the second-hand shop for key winter items that you’d pay a fortune for if you bought them new. Try to get a good second-hand deal on items like jackets and long coats.”
When it comes to coats, it’s best to stick to colours like black, white and grey, suggests Ngoma.
“You can never go wrong with a black coat; it’s just one of those items that never goes out of fashion.”
Items such as scarves and hats are usually quite affordable and can update your winter wardrobe easily.
“Throw away your old beanies. You can ruin a great outfit by wearing a worn-out old beanie,” says Ngoma.
“Replace it with a black wide brim hat or a classic Fedora hat to give yourself a chic and trendy new look.
“Invest in a few pairs of leggings. These look great with a long jersey or underneath a dress with ankle boots.”
Being all covered up doesn’t mean you should do away with the jewellery.
“A long necklace can add some sass to a boring polo neck. You could also wear a chunky bracelet over a jersey that fits tightly on your arms.
“Two or three new scarves can add a dash of colour to your winter outfit. The colour of your scarf should complement your outfit, not match with it.”
