How much are your old handbags worth? There’s an app for that

Preloved fashion is having a moment, meaning there has never been a better time to score a luxury bargain — or, for that matter, clear out your closet.

Luxury handbag resale platform Rebag is making the process of buying and selling preloved goods simpler with the launch of a new app, Clair by Rebag, which can instantly determine the resale value of a designer bag.

The name ‘Clair’ stands for ‘Comprehensive Luxury Appraisal Index for Resale’.

“With more and more consumers contemplating the resale value of their luxury purchases, we’ve created a taxonomy that provides a more transparent way for consumers to shop more wisely,” said Charles Gorra, Founder and CEO of Rebag.

“We’ve spent years gathering data and analysing the luxury handbag market. Clair is our way of sharing that knowledge with the world — and it’s only the beginning.”

The app, which is accessible via mobile app or the Rebag website, evaluates bags using information about the brand, model, style, size, colour and condition, offering potential buyers and sellers an instant resale value.

Rebag has also come up with a transparent appraisal index and a series of universal codes and condition grades that act as a reference for buyers and sellers, designed to reduce the time normally required to receive a quote.

Luxury bags have become one of the key focus areas for fashion companies encouraging a circular economy recently.

Earlier this year, the online retailer Farfetch unveiled ‘Farfetch Second Life’, a European pilot service that allows shoppers to use preloved designer bags as a way to earn store credit by uploading photos of their bags and receiving a quote that is then converted to credit if the offer is accepted and the piece validated after being collected by the company for resale.
