If you are looking to spice up your sex life and add some excitement to your intimate encounters, sexting and role-play might be the answer to your dry spell.
Sex Educator Lisa Welsh says games are an excellent way to break the monotony of routine sex and create a sense of adventure and playfulness in a relationship.
“Playing games with your partner can create a safe and fun space where you can explore new ideas, experiment with different techniques, and playfully communicate your desires and fantasies,” said Welsh, adding that it can lead to deeper intimacy and connection.
From cell phone games like sexting scavenger hunts, truth or dare texts, and virtual strip teases, to more physical games like naked twister, massage games, and sensory exploration, there’s something for everyone in the sex-play arsenal.
Welsh added that there are also more daring games such as breath play, Shibari, better known as Japanese rope play and impact play. The latter meaning being hit by an object or being the party that hits the other, like a spanking, for example.

For couples looking to try cellphone games, Welsh offered a variety of ideas:
“Send your lover a series of sexy clues that lead them to a prize in a sexting scavenger hunt, play truth or dare via text message, take turns creating a sexy story by texting each other a sentence or two at a time, or send your partner a series of photos or videos of you teasing them with your body in a virtual strip tease.”
Role-playing is another try-at-home option for couples looking to explore their fantasies.
“Take on different personas or fantasies through role-playing games. You can dress up, create scenarios, and act out various scenarios to explore your desires and fantasies,” suggests Welsh.
She says this can be a great way to connect on a deeper level and understand each other’s desires and fantasies better.
But the million-dollar question always remains: How do you initiate gameplay with your partner?
Welsh suggests starting small, being confident, communicating clearly, being playful, and respecting your partner’s boundaries.
“Remember, the most important thing is that both you and your partner are comfortable and enjoying the game,” she noted.
Welsh suggests start with something simple and non-threatening, like playing a game of Truth or Dare.
“This will help build trust and comfort before moving on to more daring games. Be clear and direct with your partner about what you want to try and why you think it would be fun.
“Communicate your boundaries and encourage your partner to do the same so that you can both enjoy the game safely and respectfully. Approach the game with a positive attitude and a sense of humour, and if things don’t go exactly as planned, try not to take it too seriously and enjoy the moment.”

Despite the excitement and adventure that can come with more edgy gameplay, Welsh cautions couples to be aware of the potential risks involved, including physical injury, emotional trauma, relationship strain, legal issues, and disease transmission.
“Always communicate with your partner and establish clear boundaries before starting any game, and don’t hesitate to stop or adjust the game if it’s not working for you,” she said.
She also suggests using proper safety equipment and having a clear understanding of how to use it before starting any game, establishing clear boundaries and safe words, and engaging in open and honest conversations about desires and expectations.
“Additionally, it’s essential to ensure that all activities are consensual and legal.”
Welsh said: “Incorporating games into your sex life can be a fun and fulfilling way to deepen your connection with your partner, explore new experiences, and keep the spark alive.
Remember to keep communication and consent at the forefront and enjoy the adventure of playful intimacy with your partner.
