In recent years, society has experienced a significant shift in the way sexuality is approached and expressed. It’s an ever-changing universe, but the days of mass consumption of blatant sexuality and adult content is nearing its end.
According to Sex Educator Lisa Welsh, we are moving towards celebrating the human body in all its forms, with an emphasis on subtlety, sensuality and leaving a lot to the imagination. This change is apparent in fashion trends, adult content consumption, and even interpersonal interactions.
Welsh explained that the cultural trend towards embracing diverse body types and creative self-expression is evident in fashion and popular media. This includes the rise of inclusive lingerie brands and social media accounts featuring individuals showcasing their bodies in creative ways. It’s all about daring to go bare, but not quite.

Going commando or donning every wear without undies keeps growing as a trend. The free-the-nipple movement has already seen influencers and Hollywood stars embrace the idea of ditching their bras. Sexy cut-out dresses, very low-slung pants and even skirts have driven the trend down under, among others.
The growing popularity of going without underwear is also attributable to various factors such as comfort, self-expression, confidence, and a desire for freedom from restrictive clothing. Additionally, it can create a sense of excitement and anticipation, as it is often viewed as a form of exhibitionism, body positive content on social media or a way to tease a partner.
Underwear as outerwear keeps making a comeback in fashion, too. It was popularised by celebrities like Madonna several decades ago. According to Welsh, this trend represents sexual empowerment, confidence, and a celebration of the human body.
“By wearing lingerie as outerwear, people are challenging traditional norms of dress and expressing themselves in a more provocative and daring way,” she said.
These trends focus more on the seduction of the mind than blatant sexuality, allowing individuals to escape societal expectations and embrace their unique style and sexuality. The emphasis on subtlety and allure creates a sense of mystery and anticipation, which can be a powerful form of seduction.
Changes in fashion trends have also influenced adult content consumption. Welsh noted a shift towards more subtle and sensual content, as evidenced by the rise of ethical, feminist, and couples’ porn, as well as the growing interest in soft porn.
“These types of content prioritise consent, communication, pleasure, and emotional connection between performers,” she noted.

Welsh suggested that it also reflects a broader cultural shift towards valuing consent, communication, and intimacy in sexual experiences. It also highlights a desire for more realistic and inclusive representations of sexuality, moving away from the stereotypical and often crass depictions that have dominated mainstream adult in the past.
Welsh believes it’s hard to predict with certainty what’s around the corner. However, she sees a continued focus on sensuality, inclusivity, emphasis on intimacy and connection, innovations in technology, and a greater focus on consent and ethics.
“I imagine that the rise in subtle and sensual content consumption in porn and adult entertainment will continue as consumers increasingly seek more realistic, respectful, and inclusive representations of sexuality.”
