Flexicare health insurance is transforming the way South Africans manage their healthcare needs by providing access to affordable private primary healthcare. It is designed to provide a wide range of day-to-day healthcare benefits such as unlimited doctor consultations, medicine, dentistry, optometry, and so much more!
Access to health insurance cover, such as Flexicare, not only protects members from unexpected medical costs but also ensures that they have access to quality healthcare when they need it most.
With a total membership of 120,000, Flexicare facilitates nearly 22,500 doctor consultations each month, meaning that one in every five members consults with a doctor monthly. Additionally, one in seven members fills a prescription each month. In 2024, Flexicare members mainly used their cover for doctor consultations, chronic prescribed medicine, over-the-counter medicine, and dentist appointments.
Exposure to unexpected medical costs can leave members severely out of pocket. For example, in 2024, the highest claim paid out to a Flexicare member for their healthcare needs was R63,000 and in 2023, it was R54,000. These figures highlight the magnitude of support offered by Flexicare in the management of its members’ healthcare needs.
Members can choose between two Flexicare plan options – Flexicare Core and Flexicare Plus – both options offer a basket of primary healthcare benefits.
The wellness screening includes tests for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, BMI, and HIV. In addition to the benefits specified, the Flexicare Plus plan offers members eye checks and dental checks.
Flexicare members can access primary healthcare through a wide network of 12,000 providers. A network doctor is a healthcare provider who has a contract with Discovery Health to provide the best care for members. Consultations with a network doctor are covered in full by Flexicare.
Members can see the Flexicare network of healthcare providers by using Ask Flexicare on WhatsApp on 0860 444 779. Our friendly chatbot will direct you to our Find a Provider tool, which lets you see network providers near you and allows you to make a booking.

While Flexicare is designed to cover a range of everyday healthcare needs outside of hospital, members have the option to add cover for emergency hospital needs.
The Discovery Emergency Core package, priced at R90 per month, provides coverage for accidents, trauma, and emergency medical conditions. This package includes emergency healthcare services such as casualty and in-hospital treatment for various accidents and trauma. It can be purchased as a standalone product or added to a Flexicare plan.
For more extensive coverage of in-hospital needs, beyond accident and trauma, members can explore the Discovery Emergency Plus and the Discovery Emergency Max packages.
