Are breast milk lollies really safe for our babies?
With summer around the corner, parents will be doing all they can to keep their babies cool.
Breastmilk lollies have been around for a few years now, but are they worth it?
Many moms have chosen to create their own lollies to help with sore gums and heat-induced frustrations. All you need to do is pump milk, fill the moulds (which are available in leading stores) and freeze. Apparently the breast milk lollies take a while to freeze, so it is advisable to make them a few days before use.
Moms are saying that this is a great way to cool down their little ones and increase their nutrient intake.
Even Medela is endorsing this innovative “teething” ring.
Time to get creative with your breast milk! We all know how amazing breast milk is for our little ones, but did you know that you can use it to make popsicles to help ease teething pain? If your baby has been introduced to solids, you can even add some fruits and veggies to your milk before freezing.
Read moreWhen making the breast milk popsicles, make sure to only include ingredients that your baby has already been introduced to. Blend all ingredients until completely smooth – large chunks of frozen fruit or veggies can be a choking hazard for babies.
Start with getting a baby popsicle mold that will be easy for your baby to hold on to.
However, according to The Mirror – Dr Carol Cooper has stated that you can “risk damage to your child’s lips, mouth and tongue”.
“When you think of a teething ring, there is no contact with the ice and silicon usually protects the baby’s mouth. What worries me is direct contact with ice as this can cause what doctors call ‘thermal injuries’. Breast milk should be given to babies at the right consistency and temperature – as it is. If your baby needs cooling down, there are other ways, such as taking layers off.”
There seem to be a few different opinions on this topic!
