Recipe of the day: Cheesy crunchy boerewors chilli dogs

To start off the week, take it slow and easy with this fancy version of a hot dog. This cheesy boerewors chilli dog can be made within an hour and will please your family and guests.

A recipe created by the popular flame-grilled chicken franchise, Nando’s, this cheesy boerewors chilli dog recipe can be substituted in terms of the meat.

Instead of cooking the boerewors, you can use sausages, viennas or vegan alternatives.

  • Nando’s Garlic Perinaise
  • Nando’s Peri-Peri Prego Sauce
  • 500g boerewors of your choice
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 2 cups and 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil
  • Flour for dusting
  • 6 hotdog buns, halved  and toasted on the inside
  • 3 Tomatoes, peeled and diced
  • 2 onions, diced
  • Pinch of sugar

Method

  1. Brush the boerewors with Peri-Peri Prego sauce and cook in the oven for 20 minutes at 180°C.
  2. To make the crispy opinion rings: While the boerewors is cooking, gently separate the onions to make onion rings.
  3. Heat the oil in a small saucepan. Dip the onion in water, then into the flour. Shake off the excess flour and repeat.
  4. Fry in batches in the oil until lightly golden and crispy.
  5. To make the spicy tomato relish: Fry the onion in a teaspoon of oil until soft. Add tomatoes and two tablespoons of the prego sauce and simmer for 15 minutes, add the sugar.
  6. Assemble the boeries and drizzle liberally with Nando’s Garlic Perinaise.
  7. Serve with a spicy sweet potato wedge.

Preparations: 10 minutes

Cook: 40 minutes

  • Nando’s Garlic Perinaise
  • 6-8 sweet potatoes
  • Olive oil

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. Wash sweet potatoes and slice them into wedges.
  3. Toss wedges in prego sauce, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt.
  4. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 30-40 minutes.
