Is fasting healthy for weight loss?

Have you ever considered fasting as a means of losing weight?

Many people believe that fasting is a quick and easy way to lose weight, but is it recommended by medical experts?

According to Web MD, experts do not recommend fasting as it is “not a long-term solution” to weight loss. They say it is much better to have a healthy eating plan that you will be able to adhere to over time, and one that fits into your unique lifestyle. Furthermore, studies have shown that most people tend to put the weight back on after their fasting period is over.

Different types of fast

There are different types of fast that people undertake. While some fasts involve not consuming any food at all for a specific period, other fasts involve eating food every other day, or skipping a meal occasionally.

There is insufficient research on just how well ‘on-and-off fasting’ works over a long period, so it is not advisable to consider it as a healthy option.

Chat to your doctor

Always remember to check with your doctor before making any drastic changes to your diet, especially if you are under medication or suffer from any medical condition that has an effect on your diet.

Take some time to discuss your weight and fasting with your doctor before going on any fast. He or she will be better able to tell you what the advantages and disadvantages of fasting are and whether it is a good option to consider or not.
