Ask the doctor: Insomnia and breastfeeding

Dr Dulcy Rakumakoe shares advice on reader questions.

Dear doctor, what is the cause of two-week insomnia?

Insomnia can be caused by many things, it can temporary or more long term. Mostly mental health related, like with stress, depression or anxieties.

It could be in reaction to something that affected your emotions. Rarely, it can be as a side effect of medication. See a doctor.

Dear doctor, I’m eight-months pregnant. Will my baby have a problem if I don’t breastfeed when she’s born?

The baby will not be happy because it’s a great way for the two of you to bond. Also, breast milk contains elements that protect the baby from infections and helps them grow.

If there is a good reason not to breastfeed, speak to your doctor about alternatives.
