Cassper Nyovest climbs the ladder as one of Africa’s most followed rappers

A list compiled by one of the top rap blogs, Rap City SA, finds him in the top four most followed African rap artists.

Rapper Refiloe Phoolo, aka Cassper Nyovest, is still riding high on the success of his Any Minute Now album released late last year and his popularity on the African continent has continued to rise.

The 21-track album was released in September 2020 and a few songs have been on rotation on mainstream radio stations. The album is a tribute to his first child with Thobeka Majozi, son Khotso, which means peace in Setswana.

A list compiled by one of the top rap blogs, Rap City SA, finds the local rapper in the top four most followed African rap artists, his name is amongst other industry giants.

At the top of the list is Olamida a Nigeran hip hop artist, his latest single Loading featuring Bad Boy Timz has been viewed more than six million times on YouTube.

Despite having multiple success on the music front, Cassper has criticised the South African Music Awards (Samas) for not recognising those who are “deserving”.

The musician is not the only artist to air their grievances about “rigging” that occurs on the award show.

In Cassper’s opinion, the awards are meaningless and because of what he perceives as corruption and the organisers thinking they are bigger than the artists, he sees a disconnect from “the culture”.

His arch-nemesis AKA has also thrown shade at the award show, criticising the Video of the Year nominees in 2020 which didn’t include him.

Any Minute Now is still in the top 100 in parts of Africa on iTunes and Apple Music, including Swaziland, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
