Fierce competition ahead of 5th MTN Radio Awards

Some of South Africa's favourite personalities will be honoured tonight at the MTN Radio Awards.

Now in it’s fifth edition, the awards aim to recognise SA’s local radio talent from the presenters to the producers. Leading nominees include Tuks FM which is nominated in 14 categories, including campus breakfast show, and 5 FM which is nominated for 9.

The highly contested Afternoon Drive category sees popular DJs  Anele Mdoda (Highveld Stereo) and DJ Fresh (5FM) going head to head. Fresh has three Radio Awards, while Mdoda has one which she shares with former daytime show co-host Grant Nash.

As a club DJ, Fresh naturally plays the best music to drive to, while Mdoda’s larger-than-life personality keeps listeners entertained.

Her wit and charisma also earned her a rating as “hottest thing on local radio” by South African radio legend Alex Jay in 2008, and more recently she won Favourite South African Radio Personality at Nickelodeon’s 27th Annual Kid’s Choice Awards. If Mdoda’s success and popularity in recent years is anything to go by, she should walk away with this award.

Other nominees in the category are John Maythan (567 Capetalk), Damon Beard (East Coast Radio) and Martin Bester (Jacaranda FM 94.2)

“This year we have more entries who failed to get nominations, I hope they will be inspired to try even harder next year,” says Rich Mkhondo, chairperson of the awards
