Daily hacks: Tips and tricks to beat the load shedding blues

In our 'Daily hacks' series, we bring you the latest beauty tips, trends and tricks to transform your life and save you money.

It was recently announced that the country was moving back to load shedding stage 4, which means that electricity will be taken away for far more hours in the day for the rest of the week.

Being left in the dark is a major inconvenience, especially when it comes to having to do some work, preparing meals for yourself and the family, as well as needing to use your electronics when their batteries are low or have died.

These tips and tricks will help make your load shedding experience a much less painful one as you will be more prepared for the hours where Eskom has decided to leave you and your loved ones in the dark.

Using your mirrors to create more light

Using flashlights and LED lights during power outages is the better and safer solution to creating light in your room or home. Some lights, however, do not make much of a difference and will probably just light up one single room at a time.

The Walmart Retail Store has shared a hack on their TikTok page on how you can use a single flashlight to brighten up a larger area in your home.

In the video, they simply flash a flashlight into the big mirror hanging on the wall, and the mirror reflection then creates a brighter and much more spread light which reaches a larger area of the room.

Using your power bank and ring light as a lamp

This hack is super innovative and just requires you to have a power bank which is always fully charged.

Jodi-lynn has shared a video where she makes use of her selfie ring light as a lamp to create light in her bedroom during a power outage.

In the video, she is seen simply plugging her ring light into her power bank and then switching on both her power bank and ring light to brighten up her dark bedroom.

Using your bath tub as water reserve

If you are a part of the people living in Johannesburg who will soon be experiencing the water outage, then this hack is for you.

Jennifer Rhodes has shared her tip on how she stores water just before she is hit with a water and power outage.

She simply makes use of her bath tub by filling it up with water. The water she stores in her tub can then be used to flush the toilet, as well as bath each day in the basin or a separate bucket or bath tub.

Frozen water bottles

Power outages which last for hours on end usually ruin and spoil the food which is in the fridge and freezer.

Justin and Kassi have shared their trick on how they ensure that their fridge as well as foods are still kept fresh and cold during the long power outages.

In the video, they fill up many empty water bottles with tap water, and then store them in the freezer until they experience any power outages.

The frozen water bottles will ensure that the freezer recycles the cold air and uses less energy, they can be moved to the fridge to ensure that the fridge stays cold and keeps the food fresh, and incase the water also runs out, there will be clean water available.
