This is the first weekend since President Cyril Ramaphosa eased restrictions and moved the country from lockdown level 3 to level 1. What this means, is that life can slightly go back to normal and activities can resume but under strict Covid-19 regulations.
“A year after the virus first reached our shores, we have a clear path towards containing infections and, ultimately, overcoming the disease,” said the president during a “family meeting” this past Sunday.
“The country has now clearly emerged from the second wave.”
With the curfew no kicking in at 11pm, here is a list some of things you and your family can get up to, without compromising your health, and still have fun:
Gatherings are now allowed but don’t go out looking for a party. Rather host a braai for your family and a few friends you haven’t seen in a while for a catch up.
Visit your favourite restaurant and enjoy a hearty meal. The numbers have dropped and that gives you an opportunity to eat out, if you had reservations. Remember to observe social distancing.
Take your kids to the zoo to see the animals. Remember during the hard lockdown how you longed to do the small things that matter – this is one of them. Game parks, botanical gardens and aquariums are also opened.
Go for a hike and connect with nature. In the process see how you can support local businesses around by buying memorabilia. Businesses need all the help to recover from the lockdown.
Clubs are still closed and it’s probably for the best. You can still go to your local lounge, shisa nyama or pub for a drink. But take the curfew into consideration.
If you are church-goer, go to your house of worship.
The cinemas and theatres are open so catch a show you’ve been longing to watch.
Finally, enjoy the last days of summer and go a swim. Public pools and beaches are opened and you can wrap it up with a picnic as public parks opened.
