This is the first weekend since President Cyril Ramaphosa eased restrictions and moved the country from lockdown level 3 to level 1. What this means, is that life can slightly go back to normal and activities can resume but under strict Covid-19 regulations.
“A year after the virus first reached our shores, we have a clear path towards containing infections and, ultimately, overcoming the disease,” said the president during a “family meeting” this past Sunday.
“The country has now clearly emerged from the second wave.”
With the curfew no kicking in at 11pm, here is a list some of things you and your family can get up to, without compromising your health, and still have fun:
- Gatherings are now allowed but don’t go out looking for a party. Rather host a braai for your family and a few friends you haven’t seen in a while for a catch up.
- Visit your favourite restaurant and enjoy a hearty meal. The numbers have dropped and that gives you an opportunity to eat out, if you had reservations. Remember to observe social distancing.
- Take your kids to the zoo to see the animals. Remember during the hard lockdown how you longed to do the small things that matter – this is one of them. Game parks, botanical gardens and aquariums are also opened.
- Go for a hike and connect with nature. In the process see how you can support local businesses around by buying memorabilia. Businesses need all the help to recover from the lockdown.
- Clubs are still closed and it’s probably for the best. You can still go to your local lounge, shisa nyama or pub for a drink. But take the curfew into consideration.
- If you are church-goer, go to your house of worship.
- The cinemas and theatres are open so catch a show you’ve been longing to watch.
- Finally, enjoy the last days of summer and go a swim. Public pools and beaches are opened and you can wrap it up with a picnic as public parks opened.
