The organisers invite participants around the country and beyond to knit blankets, including those who are yet to learn how to knit, but are in support of the project.
Carolyn Steyn, founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, said: “There are so many knit-wits out there who can and want to knit, but don’t have the resources to do so. For example, we have recently launched the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day initiative at the Zonderwater Correctional Centre. The prisoners have already knitted a number of squares for us and are willing and able to knit more – they just need wool. That’s where you come in. We hope that in the spirit of good wool, South Africans will donate generously.”
Before the blanket will be distributed to those in need, they will be displayed at the feet of the Nelson Mandela Statue at the Union Buildings, in Pretoria on April 21, 2015 to recognise South Africa’s 21 years of democracy.
Airlink and Stuttafork Van Lines are expected to return the items to their places of origin for distribution in time for the early chills of winter.
67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day have established various points across the country for citizens to donate wool.
