Dear Doctor

After I masturbate it sometimes burns when I urinate – what causes that?  Asking for a friend

Please tell your friend that burning on urination can be caused by urinary tract infections which are most commonly bacterial. Ask him to make sure he washes his hands thoroughly with soap so that they are clean before masturbating.

Are you sure he does not have this on any other occasions? It might be helpful to visit a doctor for a urine test.

Dear Doctor

I eat very healthy but have very bad skin. What causes bad skin?
Pimples

Please ensure that by eating healthy you have cut down drastically on sugar and bad fats. But there are other causes of acne besides diet. There could be hormonal causes, having naturally oily skin, certain medications etc. Please see a dermatologist for a thorough evaluation.

Dear Doctor

Are there natural remedies that help with anxiety?
Kobus

There are things you can get at the pharmacy that are said to be natural herbs for anxiety but my education on those is very limited. It is advisable that you see a psychologist to speak about your condition. Psychotherapy has been shown to be very effective in managing anxiety. The therapist will evaluate if there is a need to put you on medication.

Dear Doctor

I’m scared to go to the dentist and I have bleeding gums. Is there anything I can do without going to the dentist?
Toothache

Please visit a general practitioner first. Bleeding gums can be caused by abnormalities that can be picked up by blood tests and you receive treatment for that. However, if you have a toothache as well there is no other way but to see a dentist. No way around it unfortunately.
