Andrew Barnes leaves eNCA

It was confirmed today that senior anchor Andrew Barnes, who co-hosts Newsday on e.tv and eNCA, will leave the channel at the end of April.

Barnes has resigned to pursue business interests in Asia.

This comes after a public spat earlier this year where it was alleged Barnes mocked Minster of Basic Education Angie Motshekga’s pronunciation of an English word.

He has worked at eNCA for 15 years. “It’s been an incredible journey here at ‘e’. I have been able to realise my childhood dream of anchoring TV news and reporting from places like Washington DC, New York and London. Those opportunities followed several rewarding years in news management.”

Mapi Mhlanga, News Director for eNCA says Andrew will be missed: “Andrew will be missed and it is difficult to imagine the Cape Town office without him. I have no doubt that his new venture will be successful.”

Barnes is leaving South Africa with his partner,  “After 23 years in broadcasting, I leave South Africa with my partner to start a new life in my favourite corner of the world, southeast Asia. I’ll be putting the years of experience I’ve gained in training and development to launch my own business in Cambodia. While Brandon and I shall miss this country, we’re excited that the time has come to spread our wings.”

Michelle Craig, who co-hosts News Day from 1-4pm on Channel 403, will continue to host the show.
