VACANCY: DIRECT (PRINT MEDIA – NEWSPAPER) SALES REPRESENTATIVE

The Citizen currently has a vacancy for a Direct Sales Representative in its sales department. The suitable candidate will be part of a vibrant, forward-thinking team, and be responsible for selling advertising opportunities to direct advertisers.

It is the ideal opportunity for an energetic, self-motivated person with a passion for sales. The successful candidate will report directly to the Direct Sales Manager.

Requirements for the position
• Minimum qualification: National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or similar
• Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a direct sales environment, related to the specific portfolio which will be discussed during the interview
• Sales or marketing diploma (IMM/AAA) will be an advantage
• Willing to do a minimum number of client visits per month of which the majority must be new business.
• Market knowledge and insight
• Strong customer service ability
• Strong negotiation skills
• Must be able to establish and maintain business relationships
• Proven references in terms of client basis within the portfolio field
• Be able to cold canvass and must be target-driven
• Strong admin and planning skills and computer literate

KEY ACCOUNT MANAGER

Main Responsibilities

  • Grow the print advertising revenue.

Requirements

VACANCY: Junior Digital Business Writer

An exciting opportunity for a go-getter with an excellent sense for business news exists as a junior digital business writer in The Citizen’s editorial department.

The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to be at the forefront of daily digital business news gathering and production in South Africa.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Identify and write high quality articles on a number of business and financial interests for a wide audience.
  • Ensure that content remains relevant to The Citizen’s differing audiences.
  • Constantly track performance of written articles and make improvements where necessary.
  • Plan, commission and execute multimedia stories with a focus on business, financial interests, personal finance, etc.
  • Be the authority on all business, economic and financial developments in South Africa.
  • For example, can explain coherently how the repo rate is determined and the role inflation plays.
  • Contribute story ideas to other editorial sections. Work with relevant editors to generate business-orientated content for these sections.  
  • Utilise analytics to maximise all stories and articles published on citizen.co.za.
  • Adhere to Google algorithm requirements and write with SEO and Google search in mind.
  • Study and adhere to The Citizen and citizen.co.za’s Voice and Style Guide.

  • Matric/Grade 12 qualification or SAQA Accredited Equivalent
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Journalism or appropriate work experience

VACANCY- VIDEO JOURNALIST      

A full time, office-based opportunity (in Industria West, Roodepoort) for a Video Journalist exists within our Editorial Department, reporting to the Head of Multimedia of The Citizen. The suitable candidate will be part of a vibrant, forward-thinking team. It is the ideal opportunity for an energetic and self-motivated person with a strong interest in and insight into news, current affairs, lifestyle and entertainment content, as well as motoring.

The four main functions of the video journalist position are producer, reporter, video operator and video editor.

  • As a producer, you will develop and plan a live or taped video segment. This can include setting up interviews, determining where a segment is to be shot or selecting the different shots to be used.
  • As a reporter, you will compile data from various sources, investigate, analyze and write your stories, editing as needed. In essence, you will combine the duties with that of a news writer, deciding what particular slant a story will take.
  • As a cameraman, you will operate your own camera/device.
  • Due to the nature of the job and being on location, both in front of the camera and operating it, you will need to take the footage you’ve acquired and create news segments suitable for online broadcasting. This requires you to have knowledge of video editing equipment.
  • You must also be able to compile video stories using still imagery, cartoons, infographics to get your story across and captivate your audience

Responsibilities

  • Produce, shoot and edit original footage using a range of devices, including Sony XD-CAM camcorders, GoPros and cell phones.
  • Edit footage quickly and present it on multiple online platforms.
  • Write articles to accompany video footage.
  • Writing, editing and processing content in line with the publication’s style.
  • Uploading and editing relevant photos and videos.
  • Promotion of own content on social media platforms in line with the company’s digital strategy.
  • Work with the various editorial teams to ensure lively, interesting pieces.

Profile of Ideal Candidate

  • Experience in camera operation, DSLR & digital video cameras, sound equipment and the overall production process.
  • Tech savvy, with considerable knowledge of audiovisual equipment, hardware, software, troubleshooting and techniques used in photography, video production and editing.
  • Highly proficient in editing using relevant software.
  • Creative with an eye for detail and excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Display an interest in digital media technology and innovation.
