Entries set for Hawaii Stakes
Acacia Handicap and Aquanaut Handicap have entries set as well.
Two leading three-year-olds who were trained by Dominic Zaki are among the 23 entries for the Grade 2 Hawaii Stakes over 1400m at Turffontein on Saturday 27 February. The race forms part of the Guineas Day meeting which sees the running of the R1-million Betting World Gauteng Guineas and the Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, both Grade 2 events, which form the first leg of the R2-million SA Triple Crown and R1-million Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara for fillies.
Zaki had a very high regard for both of these runners and after he handed back his licence in mid-December Prospect Strike moved to Sean Tarry and Arabian Beat to Stanley Ferreira. Arabian Beat won the Grade 1 SA Nursery over 1160m and finished a 0.15-length third behind Seventh Prospect and Brazuca in the Grade 1 Golden Horseshoe over 1400m at Greyville on Vodacom Durban July Day.
He has only raced once since then and that was in the Grade 2 Merchants over 1160m last November in which he finished a disappointing 13th, 8.85 lengths behind Brutal Force.
Prospect Strike has won two of his four starts and finished third behind Seventh Plain in the Grade 1 Gold Medallion over 1200m at Scottsville and then a 0.75-length second behind Rabada in the Grade 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes over 1600m at Greyville on 1 August last year with Abashiri just behind him.
Tarry has also nominated the son of Toreador for the Gauteng Guineas but he drew badly. He has drawn No 9 for the Hawaii Stakes.
Charles Laird has entered Champions Cup runner up Ice Machine while Tarry has nominated top filly Trophy Wife.
Also run on the day will be the Grade 3 Acacia Handicap for fillies and mares and the Listed Aquanaut Handicap over 2450m.
Supplementary entries close at 9am on Friday with declarations closing at 10am on Tuesday 23 February.
