Lafferty’s rhino can run

Trainer Paul Lafferty appears to have acquired a talented three-year-old in the form of Run Rhino Run.

The three-year-old began his career under the tutelage of Lezeanne Forbes and has run twice for two wins.

The gelding was sold off and now runs in the colours of Roy Moodley, who has had quite a lot of success with Lafferty who is looking to take a string of runners to Dubai for next year’s Dubai Carnival.

On debut at Scottsville over 1600m last November, Run Rhino Run bumped quite a smart horse in the Mike de Kock owned and trained Scotsnog but made him looks second rate as he romped to a 2.25-length victory at the very attractive price of 75-1.

His next start was in a MR 78 Handicap over the same course and distance but this time the money came for him and Run Rhino Run was backed from 6-1 into 3-1. Once again he ran away from his opposition, putting 3.50 lengths between himself and runner-up Forestry Law.

It is also worth noting that two winners have won their next starts from both of those form lines and in neither case was it the runner up. Scotsnog went on to lose narrowly in his next outing but then reeled off three successive victories, so the form does stand up very well.

Lafferty is obviously expecting a big run from his charge as he has engaged Anton Marcus to ride the gelding in Race 7 at Scottsville today, a MR 94 Handicap over 1400m. They are drawn No 7 and carry 55.5kg.

The main threat is likely to come from It Is Written from the Dean Kannemeyer yard.
