Scratchings make Glider Pilot hard to beat

The son AP Arrow won on debut for trainer Tyrone Zackey but, from day one, he has been unable to hold a straight line.

There is no doubt that Glider Pilot is a loaded with talent but sadly the four-year-old grey gelding is turning out to be his own worst enemy.

He was picked up cheaply for just R65,000 in his original purchase and changed hands before he even ran.

The son AP Arrow won on debut for trainer Tyrone Zackey but, from day one, he has been unable to hold a straight line.

In fact, when Piere Strydom rode him two runs back the jockey commented that the horse had battled to take the bend.

Last time out he could well have got the better of Greek Fire but on that occasion it was Craig Zackey who had to deal with the horse hanging out.

There are many who would argue Glider Pilot was too heavily penalised when given a 8kg penalty for finishing a four-length fourth behind Edict Of Nantes in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 at Greyville.

Nevertheless, Zackey’s charge will be seen back in action over 2000m on the Vaal Inside track tomorrow and with the withdrawal of Amsterdam yesterday, Glider Pilot should be hard to beat in Race 5, a MR 104 Handicap over 2000m.

It is a cracking card with some quality horses in action although the scratching of Master Switch and Amsterdam, both sold without the engagement, has reduced this field to just five runners.

Bankable Teddy and Top Shot look the two to follow Glider Pilot home. Brazuca was reported by his jockey not to be striding out last time and he does have to give at least 5kg to the balance of the field.

He has the ability but has his work cut out over this distance and under the conditions.

Swingers could be the play at this meeting as there are some races that look two-horse affairs. Certainly Gilder Pilot and Bankable Teddy look a good Swinger, while in Race 6 one could go with Shenanigans and The Rocketman.

However, the best Swinger on the day comes in Race 3 with Sailor Girl and Dreamsaremadeof. A good bet in that race could set you up for the day.
