Ya Lla is a South Sotho word that means ‘it cries’, possibly an echo or a distinctive musical sound made by an instrument.

Set in the dusty mining town of Welkom, Ya Lla will tell a story of how an extraordinary young man takes control of what is left of the once-legendary Marashea gang and tries to restore it to its former glory. It explores how a man can rise from the bottom of the food chain to a position of power and how that power can become detrimental to everything he stands for.
Lenka suffers a rude awakening when he arrives in Welkom – it turns out he will not be inheriting his father’s job as he had hoped. He manages to go underground with a crew of bandit miners, but his lack of experience causes an accident, putting everyone’s life in danger. Could this be the end for Lenka?
