Season 4 of Netflix’s Lucifer is underway, and some viewers have noticed that South African-born actress Lesley-Ann Brandt, who plays the demon Mazikeen (or Maze for short), can be heard speaking Afrikaans in the first episode.
In a scene in which she talks to her therapist, Maze is invited to speak in her language.
“Kan jy vir my verstaan wat ek praat? Want ek wil saam met jou praat,” she responds in what sounds like a demonic version of Afrikaans.
On Twitter, Brandt said she used the language as a homage to her home country.
The show, blending fantasy with a police drama, is loosely based on DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg. It has generally favourable reviews, with 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, 8.2 out of ten on IMDB.
Afrikaans has been getting a fair amount of attention lately, after it was voted the world’s sexiest language on travel blog Big 7 Travel.
The South African language was declared a sexier accent than every other accent apart from the New Zealand one. The Irish accent came in at third, the Italian accent at fourth and the Australian accent at fifth.
“Afrikaans is a hugely popular accent with many people across the globe, thanks to their unique tones and Saffa slang,” the website said.
