Movie Review – Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Moviegoers are so attuned to the Marvel "cinematic universe" that when watching the studio's films, they already know what to expect.
DYNAMIC DUO. From left, Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson). Picture: Zade Rosenthal.
There’s the formulaic climax, where superhero beats villain, and anything in between is often of little importance. Superheroes have a set agenda and there’s little or no space for the problems of the real world.
While the Captain America sequel, The Winter Soldier, broadly fits into the above description, it also has a number of surprises. With an increasingly complex and suspenseful storyline, the story’s fast paced narrative and endless action distinguishes it from some other Marvel releases, where success was based purely on gargantuan budgets and top-notch graphics.
This film was produced by Kevin Feige, who is unafraid to change things up. He steps outside the studio’s comfort zone, showing that Marvel movies are not a genre of their own, but rather that they can fit into any genre – suspense, thriller, action, drama or romance.
