Uneasy ‘7de Laan’ team anxiously wait for contract renewal
The cast and crew of popular local soapie '7de Laan' are reportedly on tenterhooks after this week receiving a letter in which they were informed that the SABC hasn't renewed the producer's contract and that filming will summarily stop if they don't do so by Friday.
The City Press quotes an excerpt from the letter, which reads: “The reality is we can’t offer an account for recorded programmes to the SABC if we do not have a signed contract. Danie Odendaal Productions does not have the cash reserves to continue indefinitely.”
The general opinion is, however, that this is not a serious matter but, according to the soapie’s spokesperson Libby Nel, merely “an administrative delay at the channel”.
“7de Laan is one of the most successful programmes on SABC2 and I can think of no other reason the contract hasn’t yet been renewed,” said Nel.
There are also those who say that the “yearly struggle to get the contract signed” is par for the course and not something to get nervous about, with SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago echoing this sentiment by insisting that there are no contractual problems.
