Twenty years of Spice celebrated

The ’90s pop chart sensation is made up of five beautifully talented girls Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Victoria Adams (now Beckham) as Posh Spice and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice).

The band became popularly known for their chart-topping hits like Wannabe, 2 become 1 and Mama from their debut album Spice, which sold more than 31 million copies worldwide. It is no doubt that they grew into a force to be reckoned with, and coining the term “girl power”, the Spice Girls remained untouchable throughout the ’90s group band era.

In 1996 the Spice Girls visited South Africa and met former president Nelson Mandela. The trip came shortly after the girls were given the opportunity to meet Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth II.

Formed by Bob Herbert and Chris Herbert of Heart Management, the Spice Girls have sold more than 80 million records and are the biggest British pop phenomenon since The Beatles in the 1960s. In 1998 the girl group released their movie Spice World along with their second album with the same title. Fans got a chance to witness the lives of their favourite pop singers.

The movie made box office sales of $10 527 222 in the first week. It was later in 1998 that Ginger Spice, Geri Halliwell, announced that she would be leaving the group to pursue her solo career.

In 2000 the group released their comeback album Forever without Geri, which featured the hit song Goodbye, a tribute to the former group member. The album was recorded in America in collaboration with Dark Child Productions and debuted worldwide. The group later dissolved as the girls focused on their personal lives and solo careers.

It was only in 2012 that the group announced they would be going on their “Reunion Tour” and were booked to close the 2012 London Olympics. This was the last time fans had the chance to sing along to all their favourite songs with all five group members on one stage.
