MultiChoice has had a successful year when it comes to films, TV and streaming, and now they have given a sneak peek into their new shows for 2022.
As part of the MultiChoice Group, Showmax had a big 2021. Original shows like The Real Housewives of Durban, Uthando Lodumo, Devilsdorp and The Wife broke many streaming records.
Candice Fangueiro, Showmax’s head of content, said in a statement that more original content was coming.
“A mix of returning favourites and groundbreaking firsts, from some of Africa’s most talented filmmakers,” she said.
This much-talked about fantasy series, billed as South Africa’s Game of Thrones, has been highly anticipated for two years and it finally has a release date, well sort off.
Blood Psalms will premiere in 2022 but an actual date has not been given. The series is set in ancient Africa, 1,100 years ago, and chronicles the rise to power of a fierce teenage princess who battles a world-ending prophecy to navigate her people through ancient curses, long-standing tribal vendettas and the wrath of the gods.

It stars eight South African Film and Television Awards (Safta) winners – Bongile Mantsai, Hamilton Dlamini, Hlubi Mboya, Mothusi Magano, Siv Ngesi, Thishiwe Ziqubu, Warren Masemola and Zolisa Xaluva. The cast also includes Thando Thabethe and Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa.
This is a docuseries about four Afrikaans couples and two singles, guided by clinical psychologist Bradley R Daniels. It will see them openly talk about their sex lives in an attempt to have better sex.
Prepare for candid interviews with sex workers, adult-shop owners, a unicorn, swingers, dominatrixes, a cross-dresser, a dungeon master, people who dress up like babies, and others who prefer full-body latex suits.
Sex in Afrikaans has been described as an eye-opening tour of what your neighbours and co-workers get up to behind closed doors.
As seen in the North American franchise, the Real Housewives in Africa is expanding as well. South Africa has two locations, Durban and Johannesburg, and Africa’s second-largest economy Nigeria has joined the reality show franchise.
The Real Housewives of Lagos will be the 16th international instalment after the announcement of the Dubai location.
“The Real Housewives franchise lends itself to localisation and we know our audience is going to love seeing the show reinvented, Naija-style. We can’t wait to show the continent – and the world – another side of Lagos, with all the drama, high fashion and luxury you’d expect from The Real Housewives franchise,” Fangueiro said.
SA film Glasshouse has received top recognition from the Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada and has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Glasshouse follows how humanity tries to survive after “the shred” – airborne dementia leaving many people lost and unable to remember who they are.
But there are a selected few who have survived in an airtight glasshouse. The family remains close-knit until the sisters decide to shelter a stranger as one of them starts falling in love with him.

A six-part survival horror series about game developers who find themselves trapped in the game of their own creation. The series is directed by multi-award-winner Salmon de Jager and produced by Emmy winner Steve Lanning.
Shows returning for a second season are The Wife, crime and police drama Crime Justice, The Real Housewives of Durban, Pastors’ Wives and Troukoors, premiering on 13 December 2021.
