Celebrities, media and friends and family of the cast of Die Real Housewives van die Wynlande flocked to the picturesque Vrede and Lust Wine Estate in Franschhoek on Thursday evening for a special screening of episode 1 of the much-anticipated new Afrikaans edition of The Real Housewives franchise.
As the sun started setting over the vineyards, guests arrived to put their best fashion foot forward on the blue carpet. The excitement in the air was palpable as guests awaited the glamorous entrance of the new Housewives on the block.
The Housewives from kykNet’s first Afrikaans edition of the franchise, Die Real Housewives van Pretoria, created quite a stir when they arrived at the event. Mel Viljoen, Peet Viljoen, Kiki La Coco, Rona Erasmus and Renske Lammerding looked glamorous as they arrived to ‘support’ the new Housewives.
Camilla McDowell from The Real Housewives of Cape Town was also in attendance. Speaking to The Citizen over a glass of bubbly, the Queen of Constantia said that she now reviews other franchises of the Real Housewives on her YouTube channel, Camilla’s World.
When Kiki La Coco took to her Instagram account three weeks ago to ask her followers if they think Die Real Housewives van die Wynlande will perform or look for parking, we’re sure not even she thought that the women from the winelands would make the ladies from Pretoria look like nursery school teachers.
What happened in episode 1 of Die Real Housewives van die Wynlande?
Many South Africans were eager to see Miss South Africa 1992 Amy Kleinhans-Curd take part in a reality television show, and she was most likely considered a fan favourite – until Anita Lloyd, the wife of KWV’s CEO, appeared on screen and took viewers by surprise with her blatant honesty and ‘potty mouth’.
The storyline of episode 1 saw the women meeting each other for the first time as a group at Amy’s relaunch of her Methode Cap Classique, Amelia.
The claws immediately come out as the women comment on each other’s choice of outfits during their on-screen interviews in the show.

The unapologetic Anita had living rooms across South Africa in stitches when she referred to Mariska Thorpe as a ‘nipple pink explosion’ – referring to Mariska’s very pink dress she wore to Amy’s event.
Being married to the CEO of one of South Africa’s most well-known brands, Anita knows her stuff and doesn’t bat an eyelid when she tells Amy what she thinks of her MCC.
The young Mariska most likely had the CEO of KWV phone his marketing department immediately when she said she has never heard of KWV.
Michelle van Zyl, the aesthetic doctor, thought the MCC tasting to be the perfect opportunity to ask Karen Schwendtke about a gossip story she heard about Karen’s fender bender with a boom at the Val de Vie estate, which elicited many different reactions from social media.
Episode 2 promises to be just as entertaining as Karen invited the women to her divorce party, which left a bit of a sour taste in Amy’s mouth as she feels divorce is not something to be celebrated.
Social media reacts to RHOWL
Social media was abuzz with viewers sharing their opinions about the wives – not all very flattering – after the episode aired.
After episode 1 Anita and Karen are the names on most South Africans’ lips and keyboards as they couldn’t wait to share their thoughts about the women from the winelands.
