‘Makoti, Are You the One?’: New reality TV show coming in Jan 2022

Local TV producers are upping the ante to get as much controversy and traction for their new shows and being a potential makoti may not be easy in this new concept.

There is a current wave of exploiting the topic of love in many new reality shows and 1Magic has announced a new reality show titled Makoti, Are You the One?

The show is based on the cultural practice referred to as ukukotiza in isiZulu – a period where a woman moves in with her in-laws after lobola is paid. For the show, however, the tradition will be adapted slightly, happening earlier in the courtship so couples can decide whether or not they want to continue with the relationship.

The reality show will have 13 episodes and follows couples from different backgrounds who are hoping to take their relationship to the next big step – marriage.

Their relationship will be put to the test when the potential wives move in with their potential in-laws for 21 days.

The potential wife will need to master tasks given to her by her mother-in-law to show her capabilities as a wife and how she fits into her new family.

At the end of the season, the couple could either grow stronger from the experience or crumble. An added twist is the possible decision from the future mother-in-law. Will she approve of the potential makoti or will the son go ahead and marry the woman he loves without their mother’s consent?

The potential makoti can also decide if she wants to be a part of this family.

Shirley Adonisi, the newly appointed director of local entertainment channels at M-Net, said their objective when creating shows like this was to continue to grow local content.

“We’re excited to start off the year with topical, original content that resonates with our audiences and will no doubt keep our viewers entertained,” she concludes.

Makoti, Are You the One? will premiere on 7 January 2022 on 1Magic at 8.30pm.
