KykNET’s Alles Malan is back on television soon and we wanted to know why the series has been getting so much traction. With family being its one main theme, it’s clearly relevant to the times and viewers wanted more.
Here is what we know about the second season:
Family is key
As in the first season, Alles Malan is all about the family as a unit. It’s the chemistry between parents, children, and siblings that makes it relatable and unique. Ultimately, the series is about family sticking together through happy and hard times, no matter what curve balls life throws at you.

The ‘Alles Malan’ actors
In addition to the Malan family, the second season will feature exciting new supporting characters like Ivan Botha, who plays a divorced man who falls in love with Elani. Sophia Passerini portrays Frik’s old high school fling.
Freek falls in love with the most popular girl in school, Jessica, played by Chelsea Thomas, while Alex van Dyk portrays the school’s biggest bully who stands in Freek’s way.
Veteran actress, Isadora Verwey also joins the second season as Brenda’s close friend and mentor and Khadija Heeger plays Lee-Anne’s domineering mother.
‘Alles Malan’ stays relevant
Each storyline follows a certain phase in life. Derik and Brenda, the patriarch and matriarch in the series, battle retirement, growing old together, and rediscovering and redefining themselves in their golden years.
Frik and Tessa experience reversed roles within the family, where Tessa becomes the primary breadwinner as Frik struggles with the falling ‘Malan Vervoer’ business while tasked, as ‘house-husband’, with the day-to-day care of the children.
Nico and Lee-anne battle through all the pressures of expecting a firstborn and Freek questions his identity as a man as he falls in love with a girl who harbours a dark past.
Elani seeks her independence as a young woman in her early twenties, and viewers will be able to relate to her way of doing things when it comes to romantic relationships.

The youngest of the cast
Frik and Tessa Malan’s kids are portrayed by Greteli Fincham (21) and Mateo Olivier (16). Greteli is pursuing a full-time acting career, but she is also a very talented illustrator, photographer, fashion designer and entrepreneur.
Mateo has been juggling school in between shooting on set. Filming the series has probably been the hardest on him, but he has a brilliant support system involving his parents, his school and fellow cast members.
‘Alles Malan’’s version of a modern family
One of the biggest themes to be explored in the second season is the fact that the modern family doesn’t necessarily have the traditional masculine and feminine roles. In many relationships today, the roles are reversed and men and women battle balancing their own masculine and feminine identities.
Prominent South African landmarks
The second season of Alles Malan was filmed in Paarl and Wellington, and various prominent landmarks are featured in the season. This includes Paarl Rock and various popular businesses thanks to the Drakenstein Municipality.
The Malan kids go to school at the very accommodating Huguenot High School, and the well-known KWV building was home to various sets, including Tessa’s lawyer’s offices.
The second season of ‘Alles Malan’ starts on 30 November at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144).
