Nothing could prepare us for the heat that would smack us right in the face. It was the kind of jokes that would make the Pope give a million Hail Mary’s.
Temperatures reached beyond boiling point at Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre as roastees mocked and ripped each other apart.
With the below the belt content, you did not know whether to scream in laughter or bite your lip in horror.
Drama-queen Khanyi Mbau was the sacrificial lamb and jokes about her private parts practically outshone Kunene at the hands of the roastees.
But Mbau stole the show not only with her revealing gold spandex leotard creation, but also with her fire as she brought the house down finishing off what UK comedian roastmaster Jimmy Carr started.
Carr referred to fellow comedian’s Tumi Morake’s weight as inflating as fast the rand and did not hold back on hot topics such as Oscar Pistorius and Jacob Zuma.
“I always wondered what Zimbabwe looked like before it turned into shit,” he said.
He also told the Sushi King that the roast was just a good warm-up for when he burns in hell.
The man of the hour, dressed in a blue blazer, red bowtie and red shoes, sat grinning on his golden throne in shades after making a grand entrance showering roastees with R50 notes.
The black and gold decorated theatre stage was filled with portraits of the loved to hate businessman, turned politician, along with a backdrop of Kunene’s initials.
Radio show host Rian van Heerden was a favourite as he added jokes in Afrikaans which could not have translated better.
