The film, based on Lois Lowry’s novel of the same name, follows a boy selected to be the Receiver of Memories in a society in which there is no conflict or sickness. The Giver is an old man who teaches the boy to use his unique gifts of the senses, Times Live reports.
According to recent reports, singer Taylor Swift and actress Katie Holmes are also set to join the star studded cast of the film.
The film will be shot in South Africa and produced by The Weinstein Company and Walden Media.
According to the CEO of the Cape Film Commission, Denis Lillie, work has already begun on ‘The Giver’, but Dezi Rorich, spokesman for Moonlighting Films, in Cape Town, said Lillie was wrong.
Moonlighting Films picked up ‘The Giver.’ It was also involved with Denzel Washington’s ‘Safehouse’ and Morgan Freeman’s ‘Invictus’.
Rorich allegedly claims that only pre-production work had begun in and around the city and filming would not start for another two or three weeks.
These statements come after foreign media reported that the cast is due in Cape Town next month.
A film industry source who asked not to be named, said: “Most of the production dates that are published are normally false, to avoid ‘commotion’. With Zulu [starring Orlando Bloom, Forest Whitaker and Tanya van Graan], we had people coming onto the set and taking photos…”
It remains to be seen when filming will officially start.
