Somizi Mhlongo doesn’t appear to be shaking in his boots after it was announced that Kurt Darren would be among the local celebrities who will be roasting him later this month
Comedy Central’s Roast of Somizi will be airing on television on the 7th of May (the longer, uncensored version will be available on Showmax on the 8th of May). The whole nation is eager to see what kinds of verbal ammo his roasters will have at their disposal on the night, but one man that Somizi is not afraid of is Kurt Darren.
The Afrikaans singer was named as a panelist – erm, sorry, roaster – this week, shortly after it was announced that Gareth Cliff would be this year’s Roast Master.
While Cliff probably has some dirt on his former Idols colleague, Somizi is convinced that there’s nothing that Kurt can throw at him that he won’t be able to handle.
In fact, in an interview with Tshisa Live, Somgaga turned the tables and roasted Kurt Darren (calm down Somizi, the event hasn’t even begun yet!)
“Kurt Darren is the most boring person I have ever known. He is huge. He is tall. No, he is not good material. His songs are the same lyrics but different instrumentals. I think Afrikaans people love him because he is the only one available now after Steve Hofmeyr.”
In the promo for this year’s Roast of Somizi, the radio and TV star made a point of requesting “one more white person” just before Kurt’s name was called out.
If Somizi is ambivalent about Kurt Darren’s inclusion, then the rest of black Twitter is completely unconvinced by the singer’s roasting capabilities.
The reaction to the latest announcement was mixed, to say the least:
If Kurt is short on inspiration, he can always roast Somizi’s singing abilities. Back in 2017, the Dominoes: Unbreakable Spirit author attempted to sing a Kurt Darren song on radio and the results were… yeah, have a look for yourself:
