Someone Great review – Not your average girly chick flick

What sets this film apart from other awesome chick flicks is that it places women in front of and behind the camera lenses.

Netflix has latched on to the fact that romantic comedies featuring a mainly female cast are crowd-pullers – and their latest offering, Someone Great, is right up there with best of them.

It has not been an easy journey for the genre and before the success of Bridesmaids, female-led rom-coms were often brushed off as “it’s just a girly remake of that awesome movie about those dudes in Vegas”.

In Someone Great, Jenny (Gina Rodriguez), an aspiring music journalist has just landed her dream job at an iconic magazine and is about to move to San Francisco. Rather than do long distance, her boyfriend of nine years decides to call it quits.

To nurse her broken heart, Jenny gathers up her two best friends, Erin (DeWanda Wise) and Blair (Brittany Snow), for one outrageous last adventure in New York, resulting in a hilarious, heartfelt story of friendship, love and what it means to let go of your 20s.

What sets Someone Great apart from other awesome chick flicks such as Girls Trip and Bad Moms is that it places women in front of and behind the camera lenses.

Shot in New York over six weeks the production had 74 women on its crew, with others as part of the cast and awesome soundtrack.

“It was such a female empowerment film,” said Rodriguez. “It was led by a woman, directed by a woman, DP-ed [photography direction] by a woman and AD-ed [assistant direction] by a woman. There were women in electric and in the camera department. I feel very proud of the people we’ve got to be a part of this.”

The film is also a personal account of a piece of director-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s history. “It was this experience of going out on the town after getting my heart ripped out that was the spark that inspired Someone Great,” said Robinson.

This Netflix Original film aired on 19 April and should definitely be added to your streaming list.
