Samthing Soweto serenades fans with intimate Twitter Spaces performance

Samthing Soweto had an impromptu intimate concert on his Twitter spaces yesterday. The performance left his fans with that warm fuzzy feeling, on what was a pretty chilly day in Gauteng.

Aptly titled It’s cold yazi! singer and songwriter, Samthing Soweto, hosted an intimate Twitter Spaces performance in what seemed like a throwback to the Covid-19 hard lockdown days, where artists lived-off virtual performances. But Samthing Soweto was essentially letting his fans into his rehearsal.

He performed some unreleased songs, his biggest hits and even played old ditties he did while part of The Fridge.

Cuts like My Mrs, Lotto and Happy Birthday. After performing the latter, the former The Soil member sarcastically sang the traditional Happy Birthday song, intimating that the song is dull.

“Not to disrespect the classics, that song sounds like someone died,” said the singer, to laughs in the background.

Samthing’s vocals were accompanied by an acoustic guitar, which made the performance more endearing as he played some of the upbeat songs acoustically.

The unexpected more than hour-long rehearsal came on a day that many in Gauteng would’ve liked to be snuggled under a fleece blanket.

Most of the fans were pleased with the Spaces performance, with others complimenting the singer’s voice.

“I’m going to announce a show real soon,” he said. “I can’t wait for you guys to hear it, these new arrangements.”

The singer welcomed requests from the listeners. Omama bomthandazo was probably the most demanded song.

Samthing hasn’t released an album since his 2019 Isphithiphithi, that was a good mash between his soulful voice and the Amapiano sonics provided by DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small.

Artists using social media

About an hour or so into his performance, Samthing’s connection got interrupted but he returned soon after.

“So, I have a limit for social media. I only interact with it for like an hour and then my phone automatically cuts me out, I think that’s what happened,” said the artist.

“I only use social media for an hour, one platform a day. So I used my hour just now and it locked me out. I’m sorry.”

Social media has given artists direct access to their fans. The access also gives artists an opportunity to get immediate feedback from some of their ardent fans. The virtual activity was fast-tracked by the Covid-19 pandemic, where many artists who were stationed at home had to find ways of sharing their art with fans.

“I hope you guys enjoyed that. It’s a rehearsal, I’ll see you next week,” Samthing said as he ended his Spaces.
