With a few days away from the controversial South African Music Awards (Samas) being hosted at the SunBet Arena at Time Square in Pretoria, organisers have announced this year’s International Achievement Honourees.
Grammy award-winning trio Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini and Nomcebo Zikode are this year’s recipients of the prestigious award, which recognises exceptional work done by South African musos beyond Mzansi borders.
“We are deeply honoured to announce the recipients of the trailblazing International Achievement Award recipients of SAMA29. These awards symbolise a celebration of excellence and a tribute to these artists’ remarkable contributions to our music industry,” said CEO of Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA), Nhlanhla Sibisi.
“South Africa has always had such a distinct sound that the world draws inspiration from. These artists continue to carry the African musical narrative forward and transcend the globe. With great excitement and pride, we present these awards to truly deserving recipients, recognising their enduring impact and global recognition.”
Previous recipients of this award include Master KG and The Ndlovu Youth Choir.

Before securing the SunBet Arena, the Samas were marred by politics last month. ANC provincial chairperson and economic development, tourism and environmental affairs MEC Siboniso Duma announced the decision to abandon its controversial R28 million plan to host the Samas ceremony in Durban.
Later, Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed President Cyril Ramaphosa advised the KwaZulu-Natal government not to sponsor and host the awards ceremony.
Last week, the Samas announced its collaboration with Africa Fest concert, which will act as the awards’ official after party.
“It’s official the Samas are joining forces with Africa Fest. In what is hailed as a show of unity by the music industry, the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) is proud to announce that #SAMA29 will be hosted in collaboration with Africa Fest,” a statement from the Samas stated.
Amapiano juggernaut Kabza De Small headlines the after party alongside the likes of Makhadzi, DBN Gogo, Samthing Soweto and Kamo Mphela.
