‘Rhythm City’ actress fears fan backlash

Itumeleng Bokaba's character in 'Rhythm City' recently found out that she is HIV-positive, and the actress says she sometimes struggles to separate her own feelings from the tumultuous emotions of fictional Mampho's.

Bokaba’s part in ‘Rhythm City’ is her first professional acting role, and she has been facing a challenging time since her character went from a carefree youngster to a troubled girl who has even tried to take her own life.

Speaking to SunBuzz about her suddenly demanding role, the actress said she more than anything fears the reaction of the show’s fans.

“There’s a little bit of fear because I am not sure how people will react towards Mampho when they see me in the streets,” she said.

But Bokaba clearly has a great passion for acting, which she says helps her to grow as a person.

“When I started playing Mampho, she was a happy girl and now she’ll undergo a very difficult, emotional journey in her life,” the 20-year-old explained.

“The greatest thing is how acting allows us to tell the stories of those who would otherwise be voiceless.

“HIV affects all of us and it can happen to anyone.”

‘Rhythm City’ airs on e.tv from Monday to Friday at 6:30pm.
