Out and on the big screen

The 21st Out In Africa Gay and Lesbian Film Festival opens on May 28 at Cinema Nouveau Rosebank and the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, with a selection of four exceptional features and two documentaries.

Kill Your Darlings, starring Daniel Radcliffe as gay beat poet Allen Ginsberg, will open the Festival. Jan Soldat will also present his extraordinary documentaries Weekend In Germany and The Incomplete at all screenings.

The line-up includes:

  •  Boy Meets Girl – directed by Eric Schaeffer: Schaeffer’s film is a poignant, sexy, romantic coming-of-age comedy about three 20-year-olds. A smart script for a positive modern fable. Identification with its story crosses gender and sexual orientation lines.

  •  Concussion – directed by Stacie Passon: A suburban lesbian housewife pushing 40 suffers a blow to the head that unleashes her latent sexuality, and sends her on an erotic journey that gives birth to a secret second life. Winner of the Berlinale Teddy Jury Award.

  • Kill Your Darlings – directed by John Krokidas: Daniel Radcliffe plays Allen Ginsberg in this biopic, set during the famed poet’s early years at Columbia University, and centring on a murder investigation involving Ginsberg, his classmate Lucien Carr, and fellow poet William S Burroughs.

  • Stranger By The Lake – directed by Alain Guiraudie: Winner of the 2013 Cannes Un Certain Regard Best Directing award, Stranger By The Lake is a candid and absorbing portrait of passion and murder at a secluded lakeside cruising spot. This thriller explores how human identity is defined and sometimes imprisoned, by our desires, drives and passions.

  • Weekend in Germany – directed by Jan Soldat: With unprecedented access, Soldat invites us behind closed doors and into the meeting place of our deepest fears and desires.
