Ocean’s 8 review – This girl gang is a joy to watch

Sandra Bullock returns to the big screen for Ocean’s 8, in which her and an all-female crew of highly likeable criminals plan pull off a massive jewellery heist.

Starring as Debbie Ocean, Bullock plays the younger sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and she’s the mastermind behind the heist. With trusted cohort Lou (played by Cate Blanchett), the two set out to rob the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York on the night of the annual MET Gala, a seemingly impossible task.

Debbie, who was framed for a crime by her ex-husband and sent to jail, spent her five years, eight months and 12 days in prison working out how to execute the heist. But it’s clear this job needs the help of the world’s best female criminal squad, so Debbie and Lou assemble a team that includes jeweller Amita (Mandy Kaling), street con-artist Constance (Awkwafina), suburban mother Tammy (Sarah Paulson), hacker Nine Ball (Rihanna) and fashion designer Rose (Helena Bonham Carter).

Their target is a necklace that’s worth more than $150 million. Self-centered Hollywood actress Daphne Kruger (Anne Hathaway) jumps onboard as an alibi when international fraud specialist (James Corden) is sent in to investigate the robbery.

Debbie Ocean, meanwhile, manages to manipulate the evidence to implicate her ex-husband in the crime to settle the score between them once and for all. It’s a gripping action, thriller, comedy and crime movie rolled into one.
